Feedback from CDI 2022: Building Resilience

Peta Sigley is the Chief Knowledge Officer (CKO) with Springfox. As CKO, Peta ensures Springfox Solutions deliver participants relevant, evidence-based information, facts and insights in a way that is practical, enjoyable and effective. Peta is passionate about incorporating the latest research into a continually renewed and refreshed blended learning offering.

Working in large corporations and philanthropic organisations from early in her career saw Peta develop an extensive grounding in business management with a focus on human resources. At Springfox, Peta draws on her first-hand experience and understanding of the pressures commonly faced by individuals, teams and organisations in the banking and finance, transport, education and not-for-profit sectors. Peta’s professional, educational and personal background enables her clients to feel fully engaged and supported.

Previously, Peta has put her own resilience to the test supporting her chronically ill partner whilst maintaining her career and family cohesion. Undoubtedly, Peta is a strong role model for her children and those who have witnessed this journey of positivity, courage and optimism.

Peta’s academic credentials include Bachelor of Economics, Master of Economic Studies, Counsellor accreditation, Graduate Diploma in Psychology. Peta is currently completing her PhD on the topic of resilience.

Agility to Change and Challenge
The goal for the session is to provide an understanding of what resilience is, its importance, and for participants to come away highly motivated to apply some practical skills to recognise and promote personal resilience characteristics as a driver of positive work outcomes, and better manage stressful situations.

Samuel is a Director at the Independent Hospital Pricing Authority, where he leads a team of statisticians, economists, and mathematicians to deliver the National Efficient Price and National Efficient Cost Determinations each year. These are used to determine the Commonwealth contribution public hospital funding in Australia.

As Director, Sam has lead the development and implementation of the past five National Efficient Price Determinations, which include the introduction of safety and quality reforms for hospital acquired complications and avoidable hospital readmissions into the national pricing model, as well as introducing a new pricing model for admitted mental health care.

Prior to leading the pricing section at IHPA, Sam developed of the cost and price models which underly the price determination for admitted acute care and small rural hospitals. Prior to his role at IHPA, Sam was mathematics research and teaching academic at the University of Wollongong.

National hospital pricing for safety and quality

Prof. Karin Thursky (MBBS, BSc, MD, FRACP, FAHMS) is an infectious diseases physician and health services researcher who has over 20 years' experience in the fields of antimicrobial stewardship and infections in the immunocompromised host. She has successfully implemented and scaled programs to improve the quality and safety of healthcare and has a national leadership role in antimicrobial stewardship and sepsis.

Professor Thursky has several roles including the Associate Director of Health Services Research and Implementation and the implementation stream for the NHMRC National Centre for Infections in Cancer Sciences at Peter MacCallum Cancer Hospital. In her role at the Doherty Institute, Karin leads the National Centre for Antimicrobial Stewardship which takes a One Health approach to AMS across all human and animal health sectors and is the Director of the Guidance Group at the Royal Melbourne Hospital which develops, implements and scales information technology to support the judicious use of antimicrobials.

The Challenges of Sepsis Surveillance using Administrative and Clinical Data

Norman hosts RN’s Health Report and since the COVID-19 pandemic, co-hosted Coronacast, a daily podcast on the coronavirus.

Norman is also a reporter and commentator on the ABC’s 7.30, Midday, News Breakfast and Four Corners and a guest host on RN Breakfast. He is a past winner of the Gold Walkley and has won other Walkleys including one in 2020. He created Invisible Enemies, on pandemics and civilisation for Channel 4 UK and broadcast in 27 countries.

Norman was awarded the medal of the Australian Academy of Science and has an honorary MD from the University of Sydney.

Resilience - My Least Favourite Word

But don't panic, there is a solution…..

Dr. Omar Shaker has worked with medical centers and physicians to help bridge the gap between doctors and CDI programs. He was a Senior Consultant for BCBS, Kaiser and HAP, as well as the Analytics Director for the California Center for Functional Medicine, helping patients improve their health through personalized data insights. Dr. Shaker has been selected as one of HIMSS global Future 50 leaders in innovation, and is the founder of Health 2.0 Egypt.

Why Do Doctors Resist CDI?

Dr Lance Emerson is the Chief Executive Officer of the Victorian Agency for Health Information (VAHI), based within the Victorian Department of Health. Lance works with the VAHI team to drive improvements in safety and quality in Victorian health services through the provision of analytics and high quality health service performance information. Lance has a passion for development and maintenance of information systems to improve consumer care, and has a PhD in the use of clinical indicators to guide better care and improve health outcomes. He has extensive experience in running specialist health organisations, having most recently been CEO of the Pharmaceutical Society of Australia (PSA) and prior to that, CEO of the Australian Research and Alliance for Children and Youth (ARACY). Lance is also a Board Director of  Bicycles for Humanity, and the Australian Red Cross Lifeblood (formerly Red Cross Blood Service).

The value of clinical documentation in improving quality, safety and population health outcomes.

While effective clinical documentation is critical for reimbursement and funding of health services, data on clinical status and associated interventions is being used in increasingly innovative ways to improve patient quality, safety and outcomes, as well as population level outcomes.

This session will detail the innovative use of clinical data, data linkage and advanced analytics to provide insights to many aspects of patient care, and demonstrate that with robust clinical data, we are able to resolve complex problems and determine best investments in a wide range of preventative interventions that fall well outside of the immediate health system. These investments are savings lives, improving wellbeing, and leading to a more equitable society.

Michelle has been the Director of Clinical Documentation Integrity (CDI) at Stanford Health Care since 2013. She earned her Associate in Nursing from Anoka-Ramsey Community College, Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the College of St. Catherine and her Master of Business Administration with Health Care Management specialization from Walden University. She has CDI experience dating back to 2005, following her clinical nursing experience in a variety of specialties and settings.

She has led successful CDI departments in academic medical centers, community hospitals, and multi-hospital systems. Her areas of interest include innovation, technology optimization, data and outcome management, performance monitoring, and enhancing provider experience. Michelle is an experienced public speaker, with engagements at local, state, and national levels. Michelle is also a former U.S. National Association of Clinical Documentation Improvement Specialists (ACDIS) Advisory Board Member and a current National ACDIS Leadership Council Member. She holds certifications in CDI, Coding and Revenue Cycle.

Measuring Up: Creating Meaningful and Strategic Performance KPIs

Andrew is a Clinical Haematology Registrar based at the Royal Adelaide Hospital, and a Senior Clinical Lecturer at the University of Adelaide. He is a passionate educator who first became interested in medical documentation’s relationship with clinical coding in 2019 and has since gone on to produce an educational video series called Coding Matters on YouTube. Whilst working at the Lyell McEwin Hospital, Coding Matters improved documentation allowing a lift in complexity level by 8% over only 6 months within the Division of Medicine. The educational resources have since been adopted by several of South Australia’s hospital networks and gained interest across multiple states. He has also produced a new format for medical discharge summaries called Handover to GP. Andrew was SA Health’s Young Professional of the Year for 2021 for his work on improving clinical documentation.
