Clinical Governance department consists of various teams of dedicated and dynamic people who work collaboratively with each other, with clinicians/teams, and with management across the district with a primary focus on quality, patient safety, patient experience, clinical excellence, and continuous improvement. The HNE Clinical Documentation Improvement Specialist will specifically work as part of the Quality Systems Team Portfolio in an energetic and supportive team, with the John Hunter Hospital team as part of an initial project and be supported by the District Coding Manager for specific coding advice. About The Role

Throughout a typical week, you, as the Clinical Documentation Improvement Specialist would be engaging with clinical staff and coders, offering expert guidance, reviewing documentation practices, and providing actionable feedback. You’ll play a key role in bridging the gap between documentation and clinical coding, while ensuring compliance and driving improvements across the system. There will be an initial focus on Hospital Acquired Complications at John Hunter Hospital.

About You

The right person will be highly motivated and be a systems thinker. You will be a good communicator who can nurture positive relationships with the many and varied services and teams we support.

We are also looking for someone with Clinical Coding experience in an acute care environment and/or formal qualifications in Clinical Coding with demonstrated knowledge and experience across a broad range of specialties.

Additionally, You Will Have

  • Knowledge of documentation requirements with understanding of their relevance to clinical coding.
  • Proficiency in interpreting clinical data and coding to ensure accurate reflection of patient care.
  • Strong attention to detail to detect inconsistencies in documentation and coding.
  • Exceptional verbal skills to engage effectively with clinicians and coders.
  • Exceptional written communication for the dissemination of program outcomes.
  • Strong critical thinking skills, with the ability to assess complex problems, develop practical solutions, and implement them effectively.
  • A team player who works well in multidisciplinary environments, capable of collaborating across departments (clinical teams, coders, finance, etc.).
  • Ability to influence and support clinicians in improving their documentation practices.
  • Excellent organisational and time management skills to handle multiple tasks and priorities.
  • Eager to innovate and improve processes with a results-orientation approach.
